McFarland

William McFarland came from Cappah Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland on the ship “North Star” and landed at Cape Ann because New York was blockaded (thus, 1812); in 1828 sent for wife and remainder of family. The initial foursome was William Sr, William Jr, “his youngest brother and a sister” [Robert and Mary]. They settled in Providence, Rhode Island. The remainder of the family came over in 1828, to Washington County, PA, then Marshall County, WV. [1] William is estimated to have been born in 1752-1753, and to have died in 1836. It is unknown when he married Jane Brown. I was unable to verify anything when I visited PRONI in 2019.

William McFarland, Jr was born 1792.

Robert McFarland was born 1794. He married Jane Bushfield sometime before 1830, as their daughter Margaret Bushfield McFarland was born November 22, 1830. Their other children are Samuel and James who “died young” (don’t know where); Elizabeth who married her cousin John, and moved to Linn Co, IA; Jane who married William Darling, and moved to Missouri; William who married Alice Curtis and moved to California (SF area I think); John who married Ella Low (Gow), and lived in Delaware, Delaware Co, OH.
Courthouse records list McFARLAND, Robt., DOD 8/11/1858, age 64, birthplace Ireland. Parents Wm & Jane McFarland; wife June McFarland [2] in West Liberty, Ohio County, WV. Jane died in West Liberty, Ohio Co., WV in 1866.

Margaret Bushfield McFarland, was born November 22, 1830, in West Liberty, Ohio Co, WV(VA at the time), met and married Abner Doble March 26, 1856, in Wheeling, VA/WV. They travelled to San Francisco during April and May 1856 via the East Coast and Panama. Her first child, daughter Elizabeth Margaret Doble, was born just over a year later. She, husband Abner and daughter Lizzie are all enumerated in the 1860 Census, living in the 12th District of San Francisco. She is noted to have been born in Virginia. She travelled back to her home at least once, as son Robert McFarland Doble was born in Short Creek, WV in 1863. In addition, she carried on a correspondance with a variety of cousins while traveling. I have two letters which were sent to her while she stayed at other cousin’s houses. They include moving comments about the Civil War. (They also prompted me to try to look up Pension Records, etc.)
She and Abner and the four children are all listed in the1870 Census, still living in the 12th Ward. She is still listed as being born VA, although WV has been a state for 7 years at this point.
She died February 14, 1904 in Berkeley, Alameda Co., CA. Obituary in the SF Chronicle according to the CAIF, as well as the Berkeley Daily Gazette
